Flexible production lines for wood and furniture manufacturing

If you manufacture furniture or work with wood panels, you know the market never stops: more product references, shorter production runs and increasingly tight deadlines.

Our flexible production lines are designed precisely for this reality: to produce more different references without stopping the production line or bearing the costs of a traditional rigid line.

Below we provide content on the types of lines we offer, their advantages and how we can configure yours to measure. You can also consult our machinery for furniture factories to see the complete range of solutions.

What are flexible assembly lines?

Flexible production lines are a system that allows rapid modification of the configuration of different workstations to optimise available space to the maximum , promote a more efficient workflow, saving time and making the most of materials.

Unlike traditional lines, these solutions are characterised due to their adaptability, allowing changes in the sequence of operations without the need to stop the process completely.

The flexibility of these lines is manifested in aspects such as:

  • Adaptation to different production volumes
  • Ability to manufacture several types of products on the same line
  • Rapid reconfiguration of machinery and workstations
  • Integration of CNC nesting technology

The key difference compared to rigid lines lies in the changeover cost. A rigid line works well with a single product and high volume, but as soon as the reference changes, downtime skyrockets.

A flexible system, on the other hand, allows that changeover to be carried out without stopping the plant, which translates into higher real productivity and delivery reliability that rigid lines cannot guarantee when the catalogue is extensive.

4 Benefits of implementing flexible lines

The adoption of flexible production lines brings numerous advantages that directly impact the company's competitiveness.

These benefits make investment in flexible lines a strategic decision for any company that seeks to maintain its competitiveness in today's industry. Among the most important benefits are:

  1. Greater adaptability to changes in demand

Flexible lines allow production to be adjusted quickly according to market fluctuations, reducing response time and improving customer satisfaction.

  1. Reduction of production times

Quick changeovers between different products minimise downtime, increasing overall production speed.

  1. Improvement in final quality

The precision of automated systems and better process control considerably reduce errors.

  1. Increased overall productivity

The combination of flexibility and high speed improves the overall efficiency of the manufacturing plant. The high productivity achieved with these flexible lines translates into increased competitiveness and profitability.

Types of flexible lines we offer at KDT

We work with three families of lines, each oriented to a specific process within the furniture factory. All can be configured to suit your plant, your volume and your references.

Flexible edge banding lines

Our edge banding lines with automatic return are designed for workshops and factories working with medium and high volumes and needing to apply edges to various references without lengthy reconfigurations.

The integrated return system eliminates manual handling between passes, reduces the operator's workload and maintains a constant production rhythm. They are ideal for both single-sided and double combination edge banding machines.

Flexible CNC boring machine lines

Boring is one of the most common bottlenecks in furniture manufacturing. Our CNC boring lines with automatic loading and unloading robots automate the entire cycle: the robot picks up the panel, positions it, the boring machine carries out the work and the system returns it stacked.

The result is a line that works in series with minimal operator intervention,

with greater speed and complete traceability of each piece. You can see more about the automation systems for machining centres that make up these lines.

Flexible lines for doors and nesting CNC

For door machining we offer both semi-automatic lines and complete automatic lines, with squaring, milling and boring integrated into a single flow.

In the case of nesting, our lines allow combining panel cutting and machining with intelligent storage systems that manage loading and unloading without manual intervention. It is the most complete solution for factories producing bespoke furniture with a wide and variable catalogue.

What is the difference between a flexible line and a rigid line?

This is the question we are most often asked by production managers when they are considering investing in automation.

Rigid line

  • Designed for a single product or very narrow family
  • High speed in long runs of the same item
  • Long and costly changeover
  • Cost-effective when volume is always the same
  • Little capacity to adapt to new market demands

Flexible line

  • Works with multiple references without stopping production
  • Fast changeover, with system reconfiguration in minutes
  • Cost-effective from medium batches and wide catalogues
  • Allows catalogue growth without changing the line
  • Greater security against demand changes or customised orders

The choice depends on the type of production: if you always manufacture the same product in large volumes, a rigid line may be sufficient.

But if your factory works with variable orders, short batches or a growing catalogue, a flexible line is the investment that truly pays for itself.

The future of production lies in flexibility

The adoption of flexible production lines is a fundamental strategic investment for manufacturing companies seeking to improve efficiency, increase productivity and adapt to changing market demands.

The integration of advanced technology, such as CNC nesting and the robotisation of some processes, together with careful planning and a focus on safety, enables the optimisation of more agile and efficient production processes.

At KDT Ibérica, we are committed to offering innovative solutions that drive our customers' flexible production, helping them achieve high performance and high speed in their manufacturing lines.

Flexibility is no longer an option, but a necessity to excel in modern industry.

Lines designed and adapted to your factory

We do not manufacture standard lines that we then try to fit into your process. Our approach starts by analysing your plant, your references and your volume to configure a line that fits from day one.

You can see the solutions in real operation in our showrooms, where we carry out tests with your own workpieces before closing any order.

Furthermore, our after-sales and technical service specialised in wood and furniture ensures that the line is always at full capacity, with fast response times and spare parts available.

Frequently asked questions about flexible production lines

Both SMEs and large furniture manufacturers benefit from these solutions. The usual starting point is a company working with more than three different product references on a recurring basis and wanting to reduce changeover times between production runs. You don't need to be a large industrial plant for the investment to make sense.

Maintenance is similar to that of any automated production line: periodic inspections of loading and unloading systems, calibration of CNC equipment and preventive maintenance of robots when present.

At KDT we support each customer with a tailored maintenance plan and an After-Sales Service with technicians specialised in wood.

It depends on the complexity of the line and the state of the facility, but in most projects the installation and testing process is completed within four to eight weeks.

We work with the customer's production team to minimise the impact on daily operations during that period.
